Lee County School District Discussing New Central School Zone that includes Gateway & a New Gateway High School

Recently the Lee County School District has been exploring possible sites for a new high school for Lee County’s South School Zone with approved funding for the project. The originally selected site for the new Lee County High School was Bonita Springs; however the community and its residents have posted strong resistance to that planned project. With the funding available for a new high school the Lee County School District has now been floating the idea of building one in a different location and one of those locations is Gateway. The Lee County School District owns the plot of land located on the Southeast corner of SR-82 and Griffin Drive in Gateway and this would be the planned location for the Gateway High School. So the Lee County School District has been exploring other options to alleviate overcrowding in all zones as well.

One solution being floated is creating a Central School Zone in Lee County that would incorporate Gateway, the Treeline Corridor and areas West of I-75 along the Daniels and Colonial Corridor to Plantation Road. The population is set to increase within that corridor as evidenced by the numerous new construction developments within Gateway, along Treeline, Six Mile Cypress and areas in between. The new Central Zone could also bring more local or convenient options for neighborhood residents, as Gateway and Treeline are on the most western edge of the East School Zone. Most school options require quite a commute for students and take parents the opposite direction of employment. The new zone would help to alleviate overcrowding in both the East and South school Zones, along with centralizing and localizing the school zones a little more.
